VR2W Stations

The VR2W acoustic receivers have been deployed in the Hatteras Bight as of January 7, 2009.  We have ten stations that are approximately 1 mile apart (land mile) off of Hatteras Village, NC.  The VR2Ws are held in place by an anchor  and heavy chain, and are attached to a piece of poly rope with a subsurface hard float (the kind used in trawls).  We have another line that extends to the surface, and is attached to a radar reflector.  The radar reflectors are painted red, and most have a blue "Research In Progress...ECU" flag on tham.

Acoustic Dopplar Current Profiler Station (ADCP)

An ADCP is an instrument that measures the velocity and direction of particles.  We have one deployed with our acoustic receivers to learn more about current patterns in the Hatteras Bight.  We hope to use the ADCP to correlate changes in current to the movements of tagged fish.  A photo of the ADCP is shown at right over a photo of a trawl-resistent shield constructed to house the ADCP.  The ADCP fits into a hole on the top of the shield.

If you find any of our gear in the water off of Hatteras, NC please do not disturb it.   It is actively sampling a 1/2 mile radius for tagged fish, turtles, and other animals.  If you find a piece of gear off-site or on the beach, please contact Roger Rulifson at (252) 328-9400.
