Spiny Dogfish Research Network
An important product of the 2007 North Carolina Sea Grant sponsored workshop on spiny dogfish was the creation of the Spiny Dogfish Research Network. The intention with the creation of this network was to develop a loose collaboration of people interested in spiny dogfish research. The goals of the research network are to increase communication and collaboration among spiny dogfish research biologists.
The end product will be reduced competition for scarce research dollars, increased collaboration and coordination on large scale research projects.
Dr. Richard Beamish (DFO Canada) introduced the idea of the Spiny Dogfish Research Network at the 2007 Sea Grant sponsored workshop on spiny dogfish, held at East Carolina University.
Several issues were identified by the Spiny Dogfish Research Network as critical foci for new research, including understanding the migration patterns of spiny dogfish, the role of spiny dogfish in the ecosystem, definitive and validated aging procedures for Pacific and Atlantic North American dogfish, and more comprehensive life history data for spiny dogfish (including the location of pupping grounds).
It is the intention of the members of the Spiny Dogfish Research Network to periodically re-evaluate research priorities. Members will discuss the research network in greater detail at the Spiny Dogfish Symposium to be held at the American Fisheries Society meeting in Ottawa, Canada.
If you would like to participate in the research network, please email Jennifer Cudney at jlc0213@ecu.edu. Jennifer will add you to our email list.
If you would like to send anything via email to the Spiny Dogfish Research Network, please email jlc0213@ecu.edu with the header "SDRN posting".
